Estrogen and Progesterone are produced in the ovaries. It is also normal for the ovaries to produce small amounts of male hormones called androgens. So androgens are produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and testes(for males).
Estrogen is responsible for female characteristics and androgens for male characteristics. In both males and females these hormones can be altered in the skin, fat tissue, and other "end"or "target" organs. Drugs such as the birth control pill can also affect hormone levels.
There are 3 stages in a women's life when androgen levels may increase 1) puberty 2) pregnancy and 3) menopause and when they do they will show there effects on a "target" or "end organ" which can be HAIR FOLLICLES, UTERUS, and or OIL GLANDS.Elevated androgens occur in 3% of women.
If you are seeing acne AND facial hair it is totally possible your androgen levels are elevated. See your doctor. Testing can detect this problem. Usually an ultrasound of the pelvic area is required to see if the ovaries are producing multiple cysts. These cysts can pump androgens (male hormones) into your system. This is a common condition known as PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. PCOS can result in facial hair, acne, infertility,and a predisposition to Diabetes. Simple blood work can also detect elevated androgens.
Medication will not eliminate the facial hair that you have. You will still need electrolysis treatment for these, but it will help stop new follicle stimulation.
